Iceberg
Iceberg originated in the USA and was given its name as it was packed in ice to survive the transportation to the UK in warm temperatures. Iceberg first arrived in the UK in the mid 1970s, it was not until 1984 that British farmers mastered the growing of it. It is now the most commonly demanded lettuce in the UK, being popular due to its crunchy texture and mild flavour. It has excellent storage qualities.
Romaine*
Romaine lettuce is also known as Cos. It was said to have originated on the Greek Island of Kos and was discovered by the Romans. Romaine has been cultivated and consumed for almost 5,000 years and is thought to be the oldest form of cultivated lettuce. Romaine lettuce has a long tight head of tightly packed crisp leaves. The most popular use for Romaine is in Caesar salads. Romaine is available in both single wholeheads and twin packs of hearts.
Little Gem*
Little gem is a small, sweet and crunchy variety of lettuce. It is popular with single households due to the portion control, and the individual leaves can be used as ‘scoops’ for dips. Little gem is available in twin packs.
Red Gem
A variety of little gem grown for its attractive red coloured leaves. It is liked by consumers as it adds colour into the wholehead lettuce category, allowing them to add variety to their salads. Red gem is available in twin packs.
Dolce Verde®
Dolce Verde® is a variety of Romaine lettuce originating from the USA and is grown in the UK only by Langmead Farms. Dolce Verde means ‘Sweet Green’ and it is a specially selected variety with an exceptionally sweet flavour. It is a unique succulent leaf with a crisp and crunchy texture. It was launched into the UK market by Langmead Farms in Summer 2007, proving to be a very popular choice with consumers.
