Spinach is a tender leaf with a subtle flavour and a creamy texture. Spinach is a member of the goosefoot family, which also includes red chard. It is thought to have originated in Ancient Persia (Iran). It has a much more recent history in Europe compared to other vegetables, only being brought to the continent in the 11th century.

Traditionally in the UK spinach is sold and used as a vegetable however more recently it has become a very popular salad ingredient.

Spinach is classed as a superfood, it is one of the top superfoods along with other dark green leafy vegetables such as Kale and Spring Greens. It is packed with nutrients including vitamins B, C and E, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and zinc whilst at the same time is very low in calories.
