Celery has been used for thousands of years, although for medicinal purposes before for eating. It has a reputation as an aphrodisiac which started in Roman times, it is also thought to help as a sleep aid. It is a very versatile vegetable that can be used in soups, stews, salads or eaten with a dip.

It is very low in calories and high in fibre which is why its often associated with dieting and weight loss. It is however a myth that celery has 'negative calories' and you burn more calories digesting it than the calories it contains.

Celery is available in both whole head and heart formats, during the summer season only from June until November.
