farming and processes
At Langmead Farms we have an expert team dedicated to organics. They aim to produce great quality and tasty food from healthy, living soils using sustainable methods. We rely on the best farming practices that work with natural cycles in order to adhere to organic farming regulations.
Examples of the way we work with natural cycles are:
• Regular crop rotation to maintain the balance of nutrients within the soil
• The use of compost to stabilise soils instead of fertilisers
• Instead of herbicides we make use of timely cultivations and ecological interactions between plants to maintain weeds at tolerable levels
• We reduce the presence of pests and diseases by designing systems that rely on natural plant resistance
• We pay careful attention to the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats and ensure the impact of the farming system on them is minimised.
Organic food is generally more expensive as lower yields are achieved and it is more labour intensive to produce than conventional. However, organic food is favoured over conventional by many consumers as it is thought to be tastier, safer and better for the environment. At Langmead Farms 15-20% of our production is organic.
