corporate responsibility
Fruit and Vegetables are low in calories and packed full of vitamins, minerals and protective plant compounds and fibre. They are a vital part of a healthy diet.
Five a Day
The Government recommends that fruit and vegetables form the main part of our diets and that we eat at least 5 portions per day. Currenty in the UK only 2-3 portions are consumed, falling short of the Government target. There is clear and growing evidence for the protective effects of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables against chronic diseases.
Superfoods
Superfoods are used to describe certain foods that have a high phytonutrient content. Consequently eating these is thought by some to prevent and reverse chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Broccoli and Spinach are classed as superfoods.
- Broccoli contains fibre, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin K and beta carotene amongst other nutrients. It is thought to reduce the risk of cancer.
- Spinach contains a synergy of of multiple nutrients and phytonutrients including vitamins B,C and E and minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and zinc. There are impressive studies demonstrating an inverse relationship between spinach consumption and cardiovascular disease and various cancers. Spinach has demonstrated more health benefits than almost any other food.
- Other vegetables grown by Langmead Farms that are superfood 'sidekicks' and provide similar health benefits to the superfoods listed above are cabbages, cauliflower, romaine lettuce, rocket and watercress.
