Langmead

Langmead Farms complies fully with environmental legislation and recognised industry standards, striving for continual improvement in environmental performance and prevention of pollution.

Energy

We measure, monitor and manage all our energy inputs. We are aware of the environmental impacts of transport operations and seek ways to reduce them wherever practical, positively striving to reduce our ‘carbon footprint’. For example, we combine operations in the field such as ploughing, subsoiling, pressing, discing, chemical application to reduce the number of times we have to go back and forth over the land; consequently reducing our diesel usage.  We also source from local suppliers as far as possible.

Waste

Working to minimise the waste generated and the impacts by seeking opportunities to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover otherwise redundant resources wherever possible. We embarked on a project in 2008 to reduce the amount of packaging we use and we have achieved reductions so far of up to 20%.

Water

We minimise water usage wherever possible, taking all practical steps to ensure our activities avoid any negative impact on aquatic and other environments and planning the use of all water resources to maximise the use of seasonal water availability and storage. An example of this is recycling waste water from the factory at Natures Way Foods

Fertilisers, Pesticides and Herbicides

  • Fertiliser usage has been reduced by replacing with compost and careful management of the soil. This means less importing of mined phosphate and potassium.
  • Pesticide usage has been reduced by working closely with seedhouses to improve the resistance of the varieties we use and utilising other available methods to protect the crop
  • Herbicide usage has been improved using 'Robohoe' and 'Robospray' precision technology
  • We have built a 'Biobed' which breaks down and purifies spare chemicals and waste chemicals to water that can be reused.
