Langmead

The Langmead Family has been farming in West Sussex for over 200 years. Langmead Farms and its sister company Natures Way Foods are both the result of the strong entrepreneurial spirit in the Langmead family, now driven by brothers Robert and David.

David started growing lettuce in the Chichester area of West Sussex in 1986. There was a shortage of domestically grown lettuce in the UK and the goal of Langmead Farms was to supply supermarkets, wholesalers and markets with a consistent and reliable high quality iceberg lettuce between May and November. The company started supplying Tesco with iceberg in 1988 and by 1989 a landmark £1m turnover was achieved. Natures Way Foods was established in 1994 by Robert and David as a direct result of Tesco asking them to produce high quality ready to eat salads from Langmead Farms.

Langmead Farms expanded rapidly into one of the most successful green and baby leaf salad growers in Europe. By 2004 the turnover was £26m, and in 2009 this is predicted to be around £48m. The company has achieved success by delivering what the customer wants today in terms of quality, service and price, whilst imagining what they want tomorrow. The location provides ideal conditions for lettuce growing, the farms being situated between the coast and the South Downs.  We farm on a mix of high grade clays, silts and sand. Langmead Farms are also industry leading in terms of innovative use of machinery and technology.

In 2008, the company further expanded into the spring onion market, growing and supplying onions to major retailers and wholesale customers from our site in Kent.
